A Regency retelling of Sleeping Beauty...
"I release you..." were the last words Rosalind remembered before her world went black. Stefan, the future duke of Montmouth, no doubt thought his words were welcomed but he couldn't have been more wrong. Oh, he was handsome as a pagan Norse god, but that was unimportant when her life as well as those of her family hung in the balance.
With less than six weeks left, Rosalind has stopped believing in the fairy tale, the prince on the white horse, and the stolen kiss that would awaken her from her worst nightmares. Resigned to her fate, she waits for the inevitable curse to run it’s course.
"We must marry at once!" Stefan declared, fully expecting Rosalind to be delighted that he had come to save her, but he was sorely mistaken. Rosalind was no simpering docile female; she was a fiery temptress with a stubborn streak only matched by his horse, Samson. Insulting, infuriating, intoxicating and alluring enough to drive a man mad. Stefan found himself thankful for the curse that required him marry her, thankful for the betrothal contract he had so recently tried to release her from...With the fortitude of a sailor shipwrecked, abandoned, and a solider warring for his life Stefan decides to lay siege to the greatest prize, Rosalind's heart.

4.5 starsUpon a Midnight Dream was such a fun read. I can be kind of picky with my old timey romances, but this one was so much fun I just didn't care. Such a great read. The story was completely ridiculous in a way that I love so much.
Rosalind has been promised to wed the heir of Montmouth. She also suffers from sleeping spells. She thought she was getting better, but then she falls asleep right when she meets Stefan, the new man she is to marry. Stefan who has recently come back to town. Stefan who his family believed dead as he was shipwrecked. Stefan who releases her from her marriage contract.
Once they both decide to not honor the wedding contract bad things start happening. There is an old wives tale that there is a curse if the two families are not kept connected. If they do not marry before the end of the year all of their family members shall perish. Both of their fathers have already passed away, Stefan's brother is not doing well, it is just not looking good. And Rosalind has been sent off to die alone, her family hoping that if they stay separated from her the curse will not affect them. Finally it seems the only thing left to do is for them to get married so Stefan sets out at once to do just that.
Oh Stefan was fun. Rosalind is not going to just marry him because of the curse. She wants to marry for love. She wants to be wooed. She wants romance and oh, poor Stefan. He just is not very good in the romance department. He tries, but Rosalind is just too beautiful. Whenever he is around her he cannot think straight. It was so much fun watching him try to win her over. Really ridiculous in all the best of ways. It made me laugh time and time again. I loved reading this story. Rosalind and Stefan were just perfect together.
Also I did really like that even though they were both super attracted to each other Stefan refused to do anything but kiss Rose before they were married. Oh the conversations and situations Stefan gets himself into were just hilarious. I loved it. He just isn't sure what he is doing, how to win Rose's heart, but boy does he try. She doesn't always see it as such and tries to steal her heart against him, but it just doesn't work. She can't help but fall for the barbarian. It was really cute. Highly recommend this read as it is just plain fun. I can't wait to read more in this series.

Upon A Midnight Dream London Fairy Tales Book 1 edition by Rachel Van Dyken Romance eBooks Reviews
This book was different from all the books I have read from Rachel Van Dyken. I loved the story and the characters. This book was PG13. I would recommend to read the book you will enjoy. Don't want to say to much about the story I preferred you read it. It is also a series so I am going to read book 2 now.
This book is a fairy tale re-telling of Sleeping Beauty. It has a historical setting that I have come to love lately. First book in the series, YA genre. It was cute. The way the author wrote the sleeping curse was pretty cool. There was a bit of sleight of hand with this curse, which I liked and I can’t go in to it more because Spoilers sweetie!
The characters were good; they didn’t really stand out for any particular reason. The only thing that really stuck out was how she wrote in the curse.
Rosalind is the oldest daughter and she is incredibly stubborn, like not in an endearing way. In a nails on a chalkboard way. I found her character to be too picky and almost uppity. She was a bit self-centered. At first Stefan came off as arrogant and condescending so I wasn’t really digging him. But then he tried to make things right and go back to her. Which I thought showed some humility. But Rosalind wasn’t having it. And it was never good enough for her. I don’t know if it was some kind of verbal foreplay that the author was going for because he kinda took it in stride a bit. That part of her character really rubbed me wrong. The way that she dismissed everything that he tried.
I bought the whole series because you can get all four books and they are full length novels for like three bucks. I think I’m gonna read the rest because The Sleeping Beauty is my favorite fairy tale with Little Red Riding hood coming in a close second and I want to see what happens. The author alludes to these other stories so I think I’m gonna check them out.
I really enjoyed this book until about halfway through. I had figured it out who the "bad guy" was almost immediately as the author seems to make it a point to specifically mention certain occurrences, but I thought the writing was good and the story was fun (thus the three stars) so I kept reading. It was about 3/4 of the way in that I just couldn't deal with it anymore; the characters were just TOO STUPID. Good Lord! I usually love regency romance novels, and I always enjoy a good retelling of a classic story, but I think it's so frustrating when they make the characters so dang dumb, like there was no common sense or basic problem solving during that time period. I thought it started so well and was looking forward to reading the other stories surrounding the characters that were introduced, but now I think I'll skip reading about the other dumb-dumbs.
I didn't even make it to forty percent before giving up. While the premise was good, the execution wasn't -- at least not for me.
The heroine's and hero's families are supposedly under a curse, and unless they are united in marriage, all family members will die.
The hero had fallen in love with his brother's fiancee and rather than stay to see them wed the hero goes to India, but he gets shipwrecked for a few years. When he returns his family is in shambles. He releases the heroine from their betrothal and her father dies.
Soon it is apparent the couple must marry before both families die off. The heroine believes she hasn't long to live but is reluctant to marry the fellow. I didn't understand her reasoning at all. However she wanted to be courted and the hero more or less tried to oblige.
Mostly he seemed bent on seduction -- and there is a difference between wooing and seducing.
The writing could be clever at times but I just couldn't stick with it.
